Our analysis, 2025
River Valley Credit Union, a small Michigan credit union whose largest market is Grand Rapids, makes mostly refinance and home-improvement loans, and more of them in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods than most similar lenders.
Refinancing made up 40.4% of its 47 loans in 2025 and home improvement 38.3%; purchases were just 12.8%. Its typical loan was $75,000, against $95,000 at similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans). Every loan was conventional.
Some 27.7% of its loans went to low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, against 17.4% at similar lenders, a higher share than about four in five of them. In 2020 the figure was 11.3%. Its share of loans to low- and moderate-income borrowers, 31.9%, sits near the middle.

In Grand Rapids it ranks 146 of 436 lenders, with an unchanged 0.1% of the dollars. Lake Michigan Credit Union leads that market by a wide margin. The credit union also lends around Traverse City, which it entered in 2019.
