Railway Credit Union raised its lending by 57% in 2025, ending six years of decline, and a larger share of its loans goes to low- and moderate-income borrowers than at nine in ten credit unions its size.
It made 108 loans, up from 69, while similar lenders, credit unions making between half and twice as many loans, grew by 7% and the whole market by 10%. Its loan count had fallen every year from 114 in 2018 to 69 in 2024. The rebound took it back near its level of 2018.
Some 46.0% of its loans went to low- and moderate-income borrowers, against 29.5% for peers. Its typical loan was $75,000, smaller than at three-quarters of peers, whose figure was $105,000. Manufactured homes made up 13.9% of its lending, where the typical peer made none, and loans for other purposes 44.4%; both may explain the small loan size.
Bismarck is its biggest market. It has lent there since 1995, ranks 18 of 145 lenders and lifted its share from 1.1% to 1.3%.
Its loans in 2025 reached 10 states. It made its first loans in the Dallas, Kansas City and Amarillo areas and in non-metro Nebraska, but ranks near the bottom in each, so the new markets added little to its total. Whether they mark a lasting push is a question for next year's data.
