Our analysis, 2025
Financial Plus Credit Union made 17% more loans in 2025, faster growth than about two-thirds of similar lenders, and it lends in small amounts for almost every purpose.
It made 466 loans, up from 397, while similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans) grew 6%. Its record swings: it made 601 loans in 2021 and 358 in 2023.
Its lending splits almost evenly four ways: home improvement 27.0%, refinance 25.5%, purchase 24.9% and other purposes 22.5%. Its typical loan, $65,000, was smaller than at nearly all similar lenders, whose typical loan was $105,000. In 2020 its typical loan was $115,000.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 37.6% of its loans, against 27.3% at similar lenders. LMI neighborhoods took 21.9%, against 15.4%. Both shares are higher than at more than four in five peers, and both have risen sharply since 2020, from 21.4% and 7.3%.
In Flint its share fell to 0.9% from 1.1%, and in Saginaw to 1.2% from 1.4%. In Bay City it rose to 1.5% from 1.2%, putting it 16th of 172 lenders. Its loan size is one possible reason for the slips: shares are measured in dollars, so a lender of mostly small loans can add loans and still lose share.
Similar lenders: same lender type, originations between half and twice the lender's in the data year. Written from the 2025 HMDA data and checked figure by figure against it.
