Align Credit Union, based in Lowell, lends mainly to people improving the homes they own, and it charges less than almost every credit union of its size.
Home improvement made up 46.1% of its 280 loans, refinances 28.2% and purchases just 10.0%. All were conventional. Its typical loan, $145,000, was larger than at about seven in ten similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans), where it was $105,000.
Its typical rate was 5.49%, against 6.88% at similar lenders, lower than nearly all of them. None of its loans was higher-priced (a rate well above the average for similar loans); at peers 2.0% were.
