First National Bank of America, a Michigan bank lending in 48 states, makes mostly conventional home-purchase loans, with far more of them in low- and moderate-income and majority-minority areas than similar banks make.
It lent in 48 states, 256 metros and 635 counties, with the most loans in North Carolina. In its largest markets it ranks far down the list: 255 of 802 in New York and 122 of 610 in Hartford, where its share held at 0.1%.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) tracts took 35.8% of its loans against 14.2% for similar lenders (national banks making between half and twice as many loans), higher than nearly all of them. Majority-minority tracts took 43.7% against 8.7%, higher than about nine in ten, and LMI borrowers 33.7%, higher than about three in four.
Home purchase made up 83.0% of originations, all conventional, with no FHA or VA lending. Manufactured homes were 6.8% of its loans against 1.1%. It also bought 1,758 loans, where the typical similar lender bought 1.
Originations fell 26% to 2,709 from 3,672, the largest fall among similar lenders, whose typical growth was 15%, while the whole market grew 10%. Volume is still above the 2,356 of 2020. One possibility is a shift toward buying loans rather than making them, since its purchases rose to 1,758 from 1,635.
