Gate City Bank, a North Dakota savings bank, ranks first in Bismarck and second in Fargo and Grand Forks, but its loan count stayed flat in 2025 while similar lenders grew.
Flat while peers grew
Originations were 3,046 against 3,056 a year earlier, while the typical similar lender (savings institutions making between half and twice as many loans) grew 16% and the whole market 10%; its growth was lower than about three in four of them. Its loan count is about half the 6,479 of 2020. Dollars lent rose, to $637.1 million from $562.3 million, so the flat count may reflect larger loans.
Lower shares in Fargo and Grand Forks
Its Fargo share fell to 10.6% from 13.4%, second to Bell Bank, and its Grand Forks share to 9.6% from 11.9%. In Bismarck it ranks 1 of 145, with 17.6%, up from 16.9%. The losses could reflect competitors growing faster there, even as its dollar volume rose.
Small loans, little jumbo lending
Its typical loan was $140,000 against $215,000 at similar lenders, lower than about five in six of them, and jumbo loans (larger than the conforming limit) were 1.6% against 3.8%.
LMI borrowers, few LMI or majority-minority areas
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 28.4% of its loans against 24.1%, higher than more than half of similar lenders. But 10.4% of loans were in LMI neighbourhoods against 15.2%, and 0.4% in majority-minority neighbourhoods against 13.1%, both the lowest among them. Both could reflect markets centred on North Dakota and Minnesota.
