Our analysis, 2025
Wrentham Co-Operative Bank, a Massachusetts savings institution founded in 1901, makes a couple of dozen home loans a year, nearly all of them large purchase mortgages.
Purchases made up 88.0% of its 25 loans in 2025 and refinances the rest. It made no home-improvement or other loans, and every loan was conventional. That is a narrow book even for a small bank.
Its typical loan was $505,000, against $225,000 at similar lenders, savings institutions making between half and twice as many loans. Its loans were larger than at about four in five of them. So its $14.6 million of lending was more than at about three in five peers, despite making fewer loans than most.
It made 25 loans, up from 24, a rise of 4% against 2% at the typical peer. It made 63 loans in 2018 and has made fewer since. It filed no report for 2020 or 2021; those are gaps in the record, not years without lending.
It has lent in Boston since 1992 and ranks 312 of 664 lenders there, where Citizens Bank leads. It also lends around Providence, Worcester and Barnstable Town. With 25 loans, its shares of lending to poorer borrowers and neighborhoods rest on too few loans to read much into.
Similar lenders: same lender type, originations between half and twice the lender's in the data year. Written from the 2025 HMDA data and checked figure by figure against it.
FIG. 1 — LOANS ORIGINATED, 2018–2025
Originated means the loan was made: applications denied, withdrawn or not accepted are not counted. Years with no HMDA report from this lender are left out: since 2020 a bank making fewer than 100 closed-end loans a year need not report. Wrentham Co-Operative Bank took 27 applications in 2025.
