Wheelhouse Credit Union, a San Diego credit union, is almost purely a refinance lender, and its loans grew by about a quarter in 2025.
Refinances made up 97.9% of its 143 loans in 2025; purchases were 2.1%. Every loan was conventional. Its typical loan was $125,000, a little larger than the $105,000 at similar lenders, credit unions making between half and twice as many loans.
Its loans rose 24%, from 115, against 9% at similar lenders and 10% for the whole market. It has grown every year since 2022, when it made 64. It filed no report for 2018 to 2020; those are gaps in the record, not years without lending.
Loans in majority-minority neighborhoods were 44.1% of its lending, against 9.8% at similar lenders, more than at about five in six of them. Borrowers with low or moderate incomes (LMI) took 15.6%, against 28.9%, fewer than at about nine in ten. One possible reason is its refinance focus: refinance borrowers already own their homes. None of its loans was higher-priced, a rate well above the average for similar loans.
Its loans reached 11 metros, all in California. In San Diego, its largest market, it held a 0.1% share and ranked 187th of 639 lenders, in a market led by United Wholesale Mortgage.
