Western State Bank, a North Dakota bank, raised its loans by 40% in 2025 and doubled its share of the Fargo market.
The bank made 240 loans in 2025, up from 171 a year earlier. Similar lenders, state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans, grew by 9% at the middle, and the whole market by 10%; only about one in ten grew faster. The rise follows three lean years: it made 850 loans in 2020 and 174 in 2023.
Fargo is its largest market. Its share there rose from 1.5% to 3.2%, putting it ninth of 207 lenders. Bell Bank and Gate City Bank lead that market. The bank also lends in Phoenix, where its share is 0.1%; it merged with Central Arizona Bank in 2013.
Its typical loan was $265,000, against $175,000 at similar lenders, larger than at more than four in five of them. Its dollar volume, $128.2 million, was more than double the peer middle of $50.3 million. Purchases made up 72.1% of its lending.
Borrowers with low or moderate incomes (LMI) took 35.4% of its loans, against 28.1% at similar lenders, more than at about three-quarters of them. Loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) were 8.8% of its lending; the typical similar bank made none. Its typical rate, 6.50%, was lower than at nearly nine in ten peers.
