The Nodaway Valley Bank is a steady Missouri lender of small loans and the fourth-largest mortgage lender in St. Joseph, though its lending barely moved in 2025 while similar banks grew.
It made 333 loans in 2025, against 336 in 2024. Similar banks, meaning state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans, grew by 9%, and the bank's growth was lower than about three in four of them. The longer view is steadier: it has made between 306 and 336 loans a year since 2020, up from 243 in 2018.
Its typical loan was $135,000, against $185,000 at similar banks, smaller than about three in four of them. Its mix may explain part of that. Home improvement made up 9.0% of its lending, and manufactured homes 4.8% of its loans, against 2.3% at its peers; both tend to be smaller loans.
It ranked 4 of 186 lenders in St. Joseph, where it has lent since 1990, but its share of the market's lending fell to 5.2% from 6.2%. With its own lending flat while the whole market grew by 10%, rivals there may simply have grown faster. Fairway Independent Mortgage leads that market. The bank is also spreading: it entered non-metro Montana and Nebraska in 2025.
Loans to low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers made up 22.6% of its lending, up from 16.1% five years before. Its share of loans in poorer neighborhoods, 15.6%, was close to the 16.7% at similar banks.
