Staunton Financial, a Michigan non-bank lender that has filed reports since 1990, grew its loans 17% in 2025, faster than similar lenders, almost entirely on home purchases.
Purchases made up 87.7% of its loans and refinances the rest. Similar lenders, meaning independent non-banks making between half and twice as many loans, grew 10%, as did the whole market; its loans rose 17% to 2,520. That was a second year of recovery from 1,739 in 2023, though still short of the 3,293 it made in 2020.
Its typical loan was $245,000, against $315,000 at similar lenders, lower than nearly nine in ten of them. Its share of loans to low- and moderate-income borrowers, 33.5%, was higher than about seven in ten. It relies less on government-backed loans than peers: loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) were 15.3%, against 22.6%, though up from 4.7% in 2020.
Its weight shows most in smaller markets. It ranked 3 of 172 lenders in Bay City and 5 of 175 in Midland, with 5.2% of lending there. In Ann Arbor it ranked 10 of 310, and its share rose to 2.9% from 2.6%; United Wholesale Mortgage and Walker & Dunlop lead that market.
It now lends in nine states. In 2025 it made its first loans in Wichita, KS, Crestview-Fort Walton Beach-Destin, FL and non-metro Alabama, though its shares there are still tiny.
