Our analysis, 2025
Southland Credit Union is a California lender whose home lending is mostly home-improvement and other loans to people who already own homes, larger than its peers'.
Home improvement made up 33.3% of its 291 loans in 2025 and other purposes 24.4%. Purchases and refinancing made up the rest, at 22.0% and 20.3%. Every loan was conventional.
Its typical loan was $235,000, against $105,000 for similar lenders, credit unions making between half and twice as many loans; that is larger than about nine in ten of them. Jumbo loans, larger than the conforming limit, made up 7.9% of its lending, where most peers make none.
Of its loans, 70.8% went to majority-minority neighborhoods, against 12.8% for similar lenders. Only 9.6% went to low- and moderate-income borrowers, against 27.1%, among the lowest tenth. Its mix may explain part of this: home-improvement and other loans go to people who already own homes, who may have higher incomes than first-time buyers.
It has absorbed six credit unions since 2001, most recently Allied Healthcare Federal Credit Union in 2024. That merger is one possible source of the rise from 176 loans in 2020 to 291. Its loans grew 4% in 2025, against 7% for similar lenders. Its largest market is Los Angeles, where it ranks 201 of 757 and has lent since 1990.
