New Wave Lending Group, a California non-bank, grew its loans by 20% in 2025, twice the pace of the market, while lending in much larger amounts than its rivals.
It made 4,177 loans, up from 3,479. That was faster growth than about two-thirds of similar lenders, the 110 independent non-banks making between half and twice as many loans, whose typical growth was 10%. Its dollar volume, $2.44 billion, was higher than nearly nine in ten of them.
Almost every loan, 99.2%, was conventional, with no government backing, against 65.8% at its peers. Its typical loan was $495,000, against $315,000, and 8.0% were jumbo (larger than the conforming limit), against 1.1%. In Los Angeles, its largest market, it ranked 18 of 757 lenders.
Majority-minority neighborhoods took 67.7% of its loans, against 24.9% at its peers, a higher share than at almost all of them. Borrowers with low or moderate incomes took only 9.8%, against 28.4%. The two can fit together: a lender making large conventional loans may serve borrowers with higher incomes, wherever they live.
Its record runs from 334 loans in 2018 to 6,549 in 2021, then down to 1,637 in 2023. The past two years have brought it back to 4,177, though still below the 5,630 of 2020. It lends in 35 states, with California still its base.
