Energy Credit Union is a small Massachusetts credit union that lends mainly to people who already own their homes, for improvements and other purposes, rather than to buyers.
Purchases made up only 13.9% of its 36 loans in 2025. Loans for other purposes took 44.4% and home improvement 22.2%. Its typical loan, $95,000, is close to the $90,000 at similar lenders, here credit unions making between half and twice as many loans.
Its loans rose 57%, from 23 to 36, faster than nearly nine in ten similar lenders and well ahead of the whole market's 10%. On a base this small, a dozen loans more or less moves the rate a lot. It filed no report for 2020 to 2023; those years are gaps in the record, not years without lending.
Of its borrowers, 44.4% had low or moderate incomes (LMI), against 31.7% at similar lenders, a higher share than at about four in five of them. Its share of loans in poorer neighborhoods was lower, 8.3% against 17.5%. On 36 loans, both figures rest on a few homes and are too small to read much into.
It has lent in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton market since 1992 but ranks 396 of 664 lenders there; Citizens Bank leads. In Providence-Warwick and Worcester its share rounds to 0.0%.
