Cliffco, a non-bank lender based in Uniondale, New York, makes bigger loans than almost any lender its size, and it held its volume at 1,200 loans in 2025 while spreading into new markets.
Its typical loan was $515,000, larger than at nearly all similar lenders, here independent non-banks making between half and twice as many loans. The typical peer lent $315,000. So its 1,200 loans, a count right in the middle of the group, added up to $675.2 million, well above the peer figure of $429.8 million.
Purchases made up 81.0% of its loans. Conventional loans took 82.7%, against 67.4% at the typical peer, and loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) only 15.2%.
It made 39.9% of its loans in majority-minority neighborhoods, more than about three in four peers. Yet low- and moderate-income borrowers took only 15.6%, against 28.2% at the typical peer. Its large loan sizes are one plausible reason.
New York-Newark-Jersey City remains its main market, where it ranked 56 of 802 lenders. It now lends in 25 states and entered several metros in 2025, including Abilene, where it took 0.4% of the market in its first year. Its volume has swung widely, from 482 loans in 2018 to 1,355 in 2021 and 760 in 2022, before recovering.
