Catalyst Mortgage, a California non-bank lender that first reported in 2023, makes far more veterans' and other government-backed loans than lenders of its size.
Loans guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) made up 15.7% of its lending. Similar lenders, here other independent non-bank lenders making between half and twice as many loans, made 1.0%, and Catalyst's share was higher than at about nine in ten of them. Loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) were 28.7%, against 15.4%. Conventional loans were barely more than half its book.
Refinances were 43.5% of its loans. Home-improvement loans and purchases took 27.8% each, a large home-improvement share. Its typical loan was $395,000, against $305,000 at similar lenders, which may reflect its California base, and its typical rate was 6.43%, lower than at about three in four of them.
It first reported in 2023, with 154 loans. It made 114 in 2024 and 108 in 2025, a fall of 5%, while similar lenders fell 2% and the whole market grew 10%. Its loans came to $47.5 million.
It lent in 10 states and 42 metros. In Sacramento-Roseville-Folsom, its home market and largest, it ranked 203 of 574 lenders. It added Salinas, CA, Cleveland, TN and Lakeland-Winter Haven, FL in 2025. In none of its markets does it hold more than a sliver of the business.
