Capital Center, a Virginia mortgage company that leans on conventional refinancing, grew its lending by 56% in 2025 and ranks fourth in the Richmond market.
Its loans rose from 1,297 to 2,029. That 56% rise was faster than about nine in ten similar lenders, meaning independent non-bank lenders making between half and twice as many loans, whose typical growth was 9%. The whole market grew 10%.
Refinancing made up 52.9% of its loans and home purchases 43.4%. Conventional loans were 89.1% of the total, against 68.9% at similar lenders. Loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) were 6.4%, against 22.3%. That may explain why fewer of its borrowers have low or moderate incomes, 19.9% against 28.3%, since FHA loans often go to such buyers. Its typical rate, 6.38%, was lower than about six in seven similar lenders'.
It has lent in Richmond since 1998 and ranks 4 of 551 lenders there. Its share rose from 2.5% to 3.2%, behind Berkeley Point Capital, Rocket Mortgage and United Wholesale Mortgage. In 2025 it also entered Columbus, Pittsburgh and Lancaster.
It made 11,162 loans in 2021 and 7,429 in 2020, when its typical rate was 3.38%; by 2025 it was 6.38%. For a lender this reliant on refinancing, higher rates may account for much of the fall to 990 in 2023.
