Our analysis, 2025
C&F Mortgage, a bank-owned home-purchase lender based in Virginia, grew by a fifth in 2025 while similar lenders shrank, and it leans more than most on government-backed loans.
Its loans rose 20% to 1,845. Similar lenders (other bank-owned non-banks making between half and twice as many loans) fell 2%, and the whole market grew 10%. Its growth was faster than about four in five of those peers. It is still well below 2020, when it made 6,671 loans.
Nine in ten of its loans financed a purchase. Loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) made up 21.1% of its lending, against 12.9% at peers, and loans guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) 8.2%, against 5.4%. A third of its borrowers (33.0%) had low or moderate incomes, a larger share than at three in four peers.
It turned down 2.6% of first-lien home-purchase applications on owner-occupied homes and 4.8% of refinance applications, against 4.4% and 11.3% at peers. Higher-priced loans, those with a rate well above the average for similar loans, were 0.6% of its lending, against 1.5%.
Richmond is its biggest market and it has lent there since 1995. It ranks 8 of 551 lenders, with 2.4% of the market's lending, barely changed from 2.5% a year earlier. Berkeley Point Capital and Rocket Mortgage lead.
