Trustar Bank, a Virginia bank that first reported in 2023, makes few mortgages but big ones: its typical loan, $965,000, is larger than at almost every similar lender.
Its 57 loans in 2025 came to $61.6 million. The 538 similar lenders, state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans, typically lent $16.9 million in all and $167,500 a loan. More than a third of Trustar's loans, 37.5%, were jumbo (larger than the conforming limit), against 1.7% at the typical peer.
Purchases made up 87.7% of its lending and refinancing the rest. Every loan was conventional, with no government-backed lending. Its largest market is Washington, which it entered in 2023 and where it ranks 162 of 757 lenders; it reached Richmond in 2024 and Virginia Beach in 2025.
Loans fell 28%, from 79 to 57, while similar lenders grew 7% and the whole market 10%. That puts it among the slowest tenth of its peers. With a book this small and loans this large, a handful of deals either way can move the total.
Only 3.6% of its loans went to low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers, against 27.2% at the typical peer, among the lowest twentieth. Loans this size go mostly to higher earners, which may account for much of that. Its share in majority-minority neighborhoods, 14.0%, was higher than at about two-thirds of similar lenders.
