Omega Federal Credit Union, a Pittsburgh lender of small loans to existing homeowners, made half as many loans in 2025 as in 2024 after years of steady volume.
Refinancing made up 39.6% of its loans and home improvement 37.5%; purchases were 4.2%. Its typical loan was $55,000, against $95,000 at the typical similar lender (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans), smaller than at almost all of them.
It made 96 loans in 2025, against 189 in 2024, while similar lenders grew by 8% and the whole market by 10%. Only about one in fifty peers fell further. For seven years it had made between 157 and 201 loans a year. The figures do not say why; a change in what it offers, or in demand from its members, could account for it.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 35.6% of its loans, against 30.1% at the typical peer, and 21.9% of its loans were in LMI neighborhoods, against 17.2%. Both shares were higher than at about two in three similar lenders.
Its typical rate was 6.49%, against 6.75%, and only 1.1% of its loans were higher-priced, at a rate well above the average for similar loans, against 3.4% for the typical peer. It has lent in Pittsburgh since at least 1990 and ranked 169 of 571 lenders there.
