Northeast Community Credit Union, a Tennessee lender, grew fast in 2025 and lends more to poorer borrowers than similar credit unions do.
It made 51 loans in 2025, up 65% on the year, faster than nearly nine in ten similar credit unions (those making between half and twice as many loans), which grew 6%. The whole market grew 10%. Even so it made far fewer than its 2022 peak of 138.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 45.1% of its loans, against 31.2% at peers, higher than at about four in five. LMI neighborhoods took 27.5%, against 17.6%.
