Luso Federal Credit Union makes much larger loans than similar credit unions, at lower rates, but its lending fell by more than two-fifths in 2025.
Its typical loan, $255,000, was more than double the $95,000 at similar lenders, the credit unions making between half and twice as many loans. Its typical rate, 6.25%, was lower than their 6.75%, and none of its loans was higher-priced (a rate well above the average for similar loans).
Its loans fell 43% to 50, while similar lenders rose 6%. Few of its peers shrank as much. Its volume has swung: 51 loans in 2023, 87 in 2024. It made 198 in 2020.
Low- and moderate-income borrowers took 12.0% of its loans, against 31.3% at similar lenders, and poorer neighborhoods (low- and moderate-income tracts) 6.0%, against 17.6%. Both are lower than about nine in ten of its peers. Larger loans, with purchases at 36.0% of the book, may go to borrowers with higher incomes.
Its share of the Springfield market fell to 0.5% from 0.7%, and it ranks 49 of 322 lenders there, where it has lent since at least 1990. Fewer loans may account for the fall. Westfield Bank leads that market.
