Lake Huron Credit Union, a small Saginaw lender, is gaining share at home and lends more to modest earners and poorer neighborhoods than most similar credit unions.
Its share of the Saginaw market rose to 0.9% from 0.6%, ranking it 29 of 212 lenders; it has lent there since 1991. In Bay City its share edged up to 0.3% from 0.2%. It made 46 loans, up 10%, while similar lenders, credit unions making between half and twice as many loans, grew 3%.
Borrowers with low or moderate incomes (LMI) took 41.3% of its loans, against 31.2% at similar credit unions, higher than about three in four of them. Poorer neighborhoods took 30.4%, against 17.4%, higher than about five in six. On 46 loans, a few loans more or less move these shares, but both were high in 2024 too, at 35.7% and 47.6%.
Refinances made up 54.3% of its loans and home purchases the rest. All of it was conventional. Its typical loan, $125,000, was larger than the $92,500 at similar credit unions, higher than about two-thirds of them.
It made 98 loans in 2020 and 105 in 2021, then fewer each year to 42 in 2024. Its 46 loans in 2025 are nearer the 35 and 37 it made in 2018 and 2019.
