Frontier Bank, a savings institution in Sioux Falls, lends modest sums mostly to home buyers, and two in five of its borrowers have low or moderate incomes.
Purchases made up 78.2% of its 78 loans in 2025. Its typical loan was $155,000, against $245,000 at similar lenders, savings institutions making between half and twice as many loans; about four in five of them lend more per loan. Every loan was conventional, and it made no jumbo loans.
Of its borrowers, 40.9% had low or moderate incomes, against 24.3% at its peers, a higher share than nearly nine in ten of them. The share rose from 31.6% a year earlier. Its smaller loans fit that pattern.
In Sioux Falls, its home market, its share fell to 0.3% from 0.5%, and it ranked 50th of 204 lenders. Its loan count did not change while the whole market grew 10%. It may have chosen not to chase volume, or lent more elsewhere: it now lends in six states and entered two new markets in 2025. Plains Commerce Bank led the market.
It began in 1994 as Midwest Federal Savings Bank and took the name Frontier Bank in 1997. It has reported since 1999, with no report for 2020 and 2021, when small lenders need not file. It made 98 loans a year in 2018 and 2019, and between 69 and 78 a year since 2023.
