Ascendia Bank, a northern New Jersey savings institution, made 27% more loans in 2025 than in 2024, a faster rise than at most lenders its size, and nearly a third of them were for home improvement.
Its 66 loans came as similar lenders (savings institutions making between half and twice as many loans) made only 2% more. Its growth was faster than at more than three in four of them. The count is still below the 102 loans of 2021.
Home improvement made up 31.8% of its lending. Its typical loan fell to $210,000 from $435,000, yet its total lending of $47.9 million was larger than at more than four in five peers. That gap may point to a few much larger loans. Jumbo loans (larger than the conforming limit) were 13.3%, against 2.3% at peers.
Majority-minority areas took 16.7% of its loans, against 7.0% at peers, more than at about three in four of them, though down from 36.5% in 2024. Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 16.0%, against 25.9% at peers. Its jumbo lending is one possible reason. That share has risen from 5.6% five years ago.
In New York-Newark-Jersey City, its largest market, it ranked 261 of 802 lenders; JPMorgan Chase Bank led. Its loans spread across 11 counties in New Jersey.
