Armstrong Associates Federal Credit Union, in western Pennsylvania, lends almost entirely for home improvement and other purposes rather than home purchases, and it made 21% fewer loans in 2025 than in 2024.
Other-purpose loans made up 76.5% of its lending and home improvement most of the rest. Its typical loan, $55,000, was smaller than at almost all similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans). Its typical rate, 4.75%, was lower than at almost all of them. Whether such loans resemble other lenders' in its six counties, the figures here do not show.
The fall came as similar lenders made 7% more loans than a year before. The fall followed three years of growth, from 65 loans in 2022 to 86 in 2024. It filed no report for 2020 or 2021. On so few loans, a handful more or less moves the count a long way.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) neighborhoods took 29.4% of its loans, against 17.2% at similar lenders, a higher share than at about four in five of them. It made no loans in majority-minority areas, where peers made 9.1% of theirs. Its six counties, all in one state, may simply contain few such areas.
In Pittsburgh it ranked 205 of 571 lenders, and PNC Bank led. Its share slipped by 0.1 points, which a handful fewer loans could explain. It has lent there since 2004.
