Riverfront Federal Credit Union makes small loans, most of them to improve homes or for other purposes, and it is winning a bigger share of Reading's lending.
It ranks 18 of 365 lenders in Reading, where its share rose to 1.4% from 1.2%. Its loans rose 11% to 314, its most since at least 2018, when it made 79. Similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans) grew by 7% and the whole market by 10%. In 2025 it made its first loans in Johnstown and Altoona.
Purchases were only 16.9% of its loans. Home improvement took 31.8% and other purposes 26.4%. That mix may explain why its typical loan, $75,000, was smaller than at about nine in ten similar lenders, where it was $105,000.
