Macatawa Bank's lending halved in 2025, to 206 loans, while similar national banks grew 4%.
Originations fell 51% to 206, while similar lenders (national banks making between half and twice as many loans) grew 4% and the whole market 10%. The fall was steeper than at nearly all of them. It made 932 loans in 2020 and fewer in every year since; the data do not show why.
Home purchases were only 17.0% of its loans. Other-purpose loans made up 42.2% and refinances 25.7%. Its typical loan, $155,000, was smaller than peers' $182,500.
In Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, its largest market and one it has served since at least 1990, its share fell 0.9 points to 0.3%. It ranks 50 of 436; Lake Michigan Credit Union leads. Its own sharp fall in lending may account for most of the drop.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) areas took 9.7% of its loans, against 16.1% at similar lenders, lower than at more than four in five of them, though up from 5.5% in 2024. LMI borrowers took 24.2%, close to peers' 25.5%. The markets it serves, centered on Grand Rapids and non-metro Michigan, may hold fewer such areas.
