Heartland Credit Union more than doubled its lending in 2025, to 395 loans, mostly refinances, and is now the fourth-largest lender in Springfield, Illinois.
Its count rose 138% from 166, faster than at nearly all similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans), which grew 6%. Refinances made up 61.8% of its loans. It had made 596 loans in 2020 before falling to 158 in 2023.
Its share of Springfield lending rose to 4.7% from 3.2%, ranking 4 of 217 behind INB, Bank of Springfield and United Community Bank. It has lent there since at least 1990. In St. Louis and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin its share is small.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 42.0% of its loans, against 27.3%, higher than at about nine in ten similar lenders. Majority-minority areas took 0.2%, against 11.9%. Its concentration in Springfield and non-metro Illinois is a possible reason.
It turned down 2.6% of decided first-lien home-purchase applications on owner-occupied homes, against 6.6% at peers, lower than at about four in five similar lenders. None of its loans were higher-priced (a rate well above the average for similar loans), and its typical rate, 7.00%, was near the middle.
