Harvard Federal Credit Union, based in Cambridge, makes far bigger loans than other credit unions of its size: 11.9% of its loans were jumbos (larger than the conforming limit), against 0.5% at similar lenders.
Its typical loan was $205,000, against $105,000 at similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans), larger than at about nine in ten of them. Its jumbo share was higher than at nearly all. It lent $114.7 million in all, against $64.6 million at a typical peer.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 17.8% of its loans, against 27.5% at similar lenders, among the lowest seventh. Its larger loans could account for this. The share rose from 11.9% in 2024, and its share of loans in LMI neighborhoods, 15.8%, was near the middle.

Its loans fell 19% to 382 in 2025, while similar lenders' rose 6%. It made 984 loans in 2020 and 932 in 2021 before falling to 414 in 2022. Its typical rate is now 6.99%, far above its level in 2020, and the lower rates then could account for much of that peak. It ranks 96 of 664 lenders in Boston-Cambridge-Newton, where it has lent since 1992.
