First State Bank, a Texas bank that makes only conventional loans, grew 26% in 2025 after three years of decline.
It made 115 loans, up from 91. Similar lenders (state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans) grew 9%, so it rose faster than about three in four of them. The recovery is partial: its count had fallen from 223 in 2021 to 91 in 2024.
Its typical loan was $215,000, against $175,000 at similar lenders, higher than at more than two-thirds of them. Jumbo loans (larger than the conforming limit) were 4.0% of its lending, against 1.5%. Purchases made up 53.9% of its loans and other purposes 25.2%.

Its biggest market is non-metro Texas, where it has lent since 1994 and ranks 78 of 831 lenders. It also lends in New Mexico, ranking 171 of 239 in Santa Fe, and it made its first loans in Tulsa in 2025.
