Educational Federal Credit Union lends almost entirely in majority-minority neighborhoods around Miami, and in 2025 it made fewer loans while similar lenders made more.
It made 318 loans, down 19% from 395. Similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans) typically grew 7% and the whole market 10%; its change was lower than about nine in ten of them. The fall follows three years of growth from 186 loans in 2021, so it still lends more than it did from 2018 to 2021.
Majority-minority neighborhoods received 90.6% of its loans, against 12.3% at the typical similar lender, higher than almost all of them. Its lending is all in Florida, and its largest market is Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach, FL, so the figure may largely reflect the places it serves.
Borrowers with low or moderate incomes (LMI) took 15.2% of its loans, against 27.5% at similar lenders, among the lowest tenth, though up from 9.6% the year before. Its lending mix may explain part of this. Refinances made up 42.1% of its loans and home improvement 27.7%, and both go to people who already own a home. Purchases were only 11.0%.
Its typical loan was $95,000, against $105,000 at similar lenders. Every loan was conventional, with no government insurance or guarantee.
