Our analysis, 2025
EDIFI Credit Union, a New Jersey credit union, lends to people who already own their homes: it made no purchase loans in 2025, and its typical loan was smaller than at more than nine in ten similar lenders.
Other-purpose loans made up 57.3% of its lending, home improvement 39.6% and refinancing 3.1%. Its typical loan was $65,000, against $105,000 at similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans).
Its loans fell 15% in 2025, while the typical similar lender grew 7%; more than four in five grew faster. But its 227 loans in 2024 were its most in any year since 2018, and the 192 of 2025 still exceed the 160 of 2020. Its dollar volume rose, from $15.6 million to $18.0 million.
Majority-minority neighborhoods took 24.0% of its loans, against 11.1% at the typical similar lender, more than at about two-thirds of them. Its lending in the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington and Atlantic City markets may account for much of this. Its shares to low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers, 31.0%, and in LMI neighborhoods, 18.2%, were near the middle.
Its typical rate was 7.49%, against 6.75% at similar lenders. Home-improvement and other-purpose loans are usually priced above first mortgages, which may account for most of the difference.
Similar lenders: same lender type, originations between half and twice the lender's in the data year. Written from the 2025 HMDA data and checked figure by figure against it.
