Beacon Credit Union, which has lent in Lynchburg since 1991, makes more loans to fix up homes than to buy them.
Home improvement took 31.2% of its 157 loans and purchases only 22.9%. Such loans tend to be small, which may explain why its typical loan was $85,000, against $105,000 at similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans). Every loan was conventional, with no government backing.
Its loans fell 13% in 2025, to 157 from 181, while similar lenders grew by 8% and the whole market by 10%. The fall came after its loans roughly doubled from 89 in 2023. It filed no HMDA report for 2018 to 2022, so its recent record is too short to call a trend.
