Altoona First Savings Bank has become the biggest mortgage lender in its home market. In 2025 it ranked first of 146 lenders in Altoona, Pennsylvania, with 10.2% of the market's dollars, up from 2.9% a year earlier.
Its share of the Altoona market rose by 7.3 points in a year, putting it ahead of Reliance Savings Bank and First Commonwealth Bank. It has lent there since at least 1990. Beyond Altoona it barely registers, with 0.1% of the Johnstown market.
Its loans rose 45% to 161. Similar lenders, savings institutions making between half and twice as many loans, grew by 5%, and the whole market by 10%; it grew faster than about nine in ten of those peers. The rise ended a long slide: it made 275 loans in 2020 and fewer each year until 2024.
Its typical loan almost doubled, from $65,000 to $125,000, and dollar volume rose from $12.2 million to $39.6 million. Even so, its loans were smaller than at more than nine in ten similar lenders, whose typical loan was $242,500. Home purchases made up 55.3% of its lending, all of it conventional. Whether bigger purchases or a new product drove the jump is an open question.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 25.0% of its loans, close to peers' 24.8%. Its share in LMI neighborhoods was lower, 13.7% against 16.9%. It lends in only three counties, so that may reflect the make-up of the area it serves.
