Horizon Bank, an Indiana bank lending in nine states, ranks first among 241 lenders in Michigan City-La Porte, where its share rose to 12.1%, and makes an even mix of purchase, home-improvement and refinance loans.
First in its home market, and gaining
Its share of Michigan City-La Porte rose 3.2 points to 12.1% from 8.9%, ahead of Rocket Mortgage in second place. It has lent there since 1995 and merged with The Laporte Savings Bank in 2016. It also ranks 19 of 606 in non-metro Michigan and 111 of 902 in Chicago.
A balanced mix of small loans
Home purchase made up 34.3% of originations, home improvement 28.3% and refinancing 28.2%. That mix may explain why its typical loan of $125,000 is smaller than about nine in ten similar lenders (state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans), whose typical loan was $205,000.
Growth slower than peers
Originations rose 9% to 2,798, slower than about seven in ten similar lenders, whose typical growth was 13%, and a little below the whole market's 10%. Volume is about half the 5,576 of 2020 but up from 2,559 in 2024.
LMI borrowers near peers, fewer LMI areas
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 28.9% of its loans, near the 28.0% of similar lenders. Its LMI-tract share, 12.8% against 15.7%, and majority-minority-tract share, 5.1% against 9.1%, are lower than most. Markets in northern Indiana and rural Michigan, where such tracts may be fewer, could account for part of this.
