United Bank VA, a Virginia bank lending in 17 states, lends more in LMI and majority-minority areas than most similar banks, though its loan count fell 12% in 2025.
Fewer loans after an unusually high 2024
Originations fell 12% to 3,094, among the lowest tenth of similar lenders (state member banks making between half and twice as many loans), which typically grew 4%; the whole market grew 10%. One possibility is that 2024, at 3,535 loans against 1,713 in 2023, was the exceptional year: 2025 is still its second-highest since 2018, and the amount lent rose to $1.50 billion.
Much more lending in LMI and majority-minority areas
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 31.1% of its loans against 25.2%, LMI tracts 21.4% against 14.9%, and majority-minority tracts 27.6% against 12.9%; on the last two it is higher than about four in five similar lenders. Five years ago that last share was 6.1%; mergers since, including Carolina Financial in 2020, may have changed where it lends.
A buyer of loans as well as a lender
It bought 249 loans from other lenders, down from 1,474 the year before, while similar lenders typically bought 1. These are counted apart from its own 3,094 loans; the fall may reflect a choice to buy fewer.
Typical pricing, fewer refinances turned down
Higher-priced loans (a rate well above the average for similar loans) were 1.0% against 1.2%, and its typical rate, 6.62%, was slightly lower than peers' 6.81%. It turned down 10.2% of first-lien refinance applications on owner-occupied homes, lower than about three in four similar lenders.
