Members 1st Federal Credit Union is a central Pennsylvania lender of small home-improvement and refinance loans, first of 396 in Harrisburg-Carlisle and second or third in Lancaster, York-Hanover and Gettysburg.
Its Harrisburg-Carlisle share fell 1.4 points to 8.4%, still first, ahead of Rocket Mortgage and Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union. Stronger competition from national lenders or a shift in its own product mix could explain this. Elsewhere its share rose: to 6.1% in Gettysburg, 6.2% in Lancaster and 5.9% in York-Hanover, all markets it has served since before 1990.
Home improvement made up 41.0% of its loans and purchase only 12.7%. Its typical loan was $95,000, against $105,000 at similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans), smaller than about five in six of them.
Originations rose 4% to 6,476, against 10% for peers and the whole market, slower than about seven in ten of them. Its volume has been steady, 6,107 in 2018 and 6,599 in 2020, with no large peak in 2020; its small share of purchase loans may help explain both the steadiness and the slower growth.
Only 9.5% of its loans were in LMI (low- and moderate-income) areas, against 14.4%, among the lowest tenth, and 4.1% in majority-minority areas, against 10.1%. Its share of loans to LMI borrowers, 27.2% against 25.9%, was near the middle. Its central Pennsylvania markets may hold fewer such areas than peers' markets.
