SouthState Bank made about as many loans in 2025 as in 2024 but lent $3.92 billion, up from $2.89 billion, as its loans grew larger and its share of loans above the conforming limit roughly doubled.
Flat count, rising dollars
Originations rose 2%, below the 5% of similar lenders (national banks making between half and twice as many loans). Its typical loan rose to $235,000 from $205,000, and jumbo loans (larger than the conforming limit) to 10.7% from 5.2%. Its 2025 merger with Independent Bank may account for part of the change in mix.
More government lending, higher prices
FHA loans (insured by the Federal Housing Administration) were 4.6% against 2.3% for peers, and VA loans (guaranteed by the Department of Veterans Affairs) 2.0% against 0.9%. Higher-priced loans (a rate well above the average for similar loans) were 3.0% against 0.7%, while its typical rate of 6.62% matched peers. Its FHA loans, and manufactured homes at 5.8% of its loans against 0.7%, the highest share in the group, could explain much of that.
LMI-area lending above peers, but lower than 2024
Loans in LMI (low- and moderate-income) areas were 18.6%, higher than more than four in five similar lenders, though down from 22.3%. Lending in majority-minority areas fell to 22.9% from 27.4%. Larger loans after the merger could explain the drop.
Uneven share in the Carolinas and Georgia
In Augusta-Richmond County it ranks 3 of 461, and its share rose 0.2 points to 4.8%. In Charleston-North Charleston its share fell 0.6 points to 2.0%, which could reflect competition from Wells Fargo Bank and national lenders.
