Cadence Bank made 27.0% of its loans in majority-minority areas, the highest share among similar lenders, while gaining share in Houston, Memphis and Birmingham.
Highest majority-minority share among peers
Its share in majority-minority areas rose from 17.4% five years before to 27.0%, against 14.4% for similar lenders (state member banks making between half and twice as many loans), the highest in the group. Its share in low- and moderate-income (LMI) areas, 17.5%, was also above the peer 15.7%. Lending concentrated in metros such as Houston and Memphis may explain much of this.
Fewer LMI borrowers, larger loans
LMI borrowers took 21.1% of its loans, against 27.7% for peers, among the lowest tenth. Its typical loan was $215,000 against $175,000, and jumbo loans (larger than the conforming limit) were 8.6% against 3.4%. A purchase-heavy book (55.9% of loans) in large metros could account for both.
Rising share in its core metros
Its Houston share rose from 1.7% to 2.0%, ranking 6 of 929; Memphis rose from 3.5% to 3.9% and Birmingham to 3.7%. It ranks 2 of 438 in non-metro Mississippi. Originations rose 9% to 14,010, close to the 11% for peers and 10% for the market.
Few higher-priced loans, no purchased loans
Higher-priced loans (a rate well above the average for similar loans) fell from 2.4% five years before to 0.4%, the lowest among peers, whose figure was 2.1%. It bought no loans, while the typical peer bought 78, so its whole book is loans it made itself.
