First New Mexico Bank, LAS Cruces has shrunk from 176 loans five years earlier to 39, and in Las Cruces, its home market, it now ranks 32 of 231 lenders.
A long, steady contraction
Originations peaked at 200 in 2019 and have fallen every year since. The last year was nearly flat, down 2%, while similar lenders (state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans) rose 2% and the whole market rose 10%. A choice to put more of its lending outside home loans could explain it.
More manufactured homes than most peers
Manufactured homes made up 15.4% of its loans, against 2.6% for similar lenders, higher than about seven in eight of them. Too few of its first-lien purchase and refinance applications were decided to give a denial rate.
Lending concentrated in majority-minority areas
84.6% of its loans were in majority-minority areas, against 6.3% for a typical similar lender, which may follow from lending mainly around Las Cruces. Its share of loans to LMI (low- and moderate-income) borrowers, 11.1%, is lower than about five in six similar lenders, though 26.3% of its loans were in LMI areas, higher than about two-thirds of them.
A small player at home
In Las Cruces it ranks 32 of 231 lenders with 0.8% of the market, down from 0.9%, a change a few loans could make. Citizens Bank of LAS Cruces leads with $125.6M.
