Wintrust Bank, a Chicago national bank, makes large mortgages: its typical loan, $805,000, was about four times that of similar banks.
Its typical loan of $805,000 compares with $200,000 at similar lenders, national banks making between half and twice as many loans. Jumbo loans, larger than the conforming limit, were 38.2% of its loans against 2.0% at similar lenders, though down from 52.9% in 2024. This is not new: five years before, its typical loan was $705,000.
Only 7.0% of its loans went to low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers, against 25.8% at similar lenders, among the lowest tenth. A lender of large loans, whose biggest market is Chicago, may simply draw wealthier borrowers. Its share of loans in majority-minority neighborhoods, 22.2%, was about three times similar lenders' 7.3%.
It denied 3.0% of first-lien home-purchase applications, about half the 6.0% at similar lenders. It also bought 30 loans from other lenders, while the typical similar bank bought none.
Chicago remains its biggest market, where it ranked 44 of 902. It has been adding markets far from home: Bozeman, MT in 2023, and Fayetteville, NC and Brunswick-St. Simons, GA in 2025. Its share rose a little in Nashville and in Charleston-North Charleston.
