Valley Communities Credit Union, a rural Wisconsin lender, grew its loans by more than a quarter in 2025 and gained share in its home market of Wausau.
It made 219 loans in 2025, up 29% from 170. Similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans) grew 7%, so it grew faster than about three-quarters of them. Refinances made up 45.7% of its loans and other purposes 34.2%. It is still below the 343 loans of 2020.
It has lent in Wausau since 1992 and ranks 20 of 196 lenders there. Its share rose to 1.4% from 1.1%. Covantage Credit Union leads that market. In non-metro Wisconsin, its largest market, it ranks 91 of 659.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 32.0% of its loans, against 27.7% at the typical peer, more than at nearly two-thirds of them. Only 6.9% went to LMI neighborhoods, against 16.5%, and none to majority-minority neighborhoods. Its rural Wisconsin markets may simply have few such neighborhoods.
Its typical rate was 6.08%, against 6.75% at similar lenders, lower than at more than four in five. Its higher-priced share (a rate well above the average for similar loans) was 1.8%, close to peers' 1.9%.
