University of Illinois Community Credit Union more than doubled its lending in 2025, to 285 loans, most of them home purchases.
Its loans rose 110%, from 136 to 285, while similar lenders (credit unions making between half and twice as many loans) grew 6% and the whole market 10%. That was faster growth than at almost all of them. It last made more in 2021, with 298.
Purchases made up 78.2% of its loans and refinances 21.8%. Its typical rate, 5.50%, was lower than at about nineteen in twenty peers, against 6.88%; the figures do not show why.
Its share of lending rose in Champaign-Urbana, where it has lent since 1990. In Bloomington it rose from 0.2% to 0.7%, a rank of 28 of 221. In 2025 it made its first loans in markets as far off as Philadelphia and Janesville-Beloit, and it now lends in 9 states.
Low- and moderate-income (LMI) borrowers took 22.5% of its loans, against 27.5% at similar lenders, lower than at about seven in ten. Its loans in LMI neighborhoods, 13.1%, were also below peers' 15.8%. Its lending is mostly to home buyers, who may on average earn more than the borrowers of lenders that do more refinancing or home-improvement lending.
