United Heritage Credit Union, of Austin, lends mainly for home improvements and other purposes rather than home purchases, and much of its lending goes to majority-minority neighborhoods.
Home improvement made up 50.8% of its 313 loans and other purposes 28.4%. Purchases were only 4.5%. Its typical loan, $115,000, was close to the $105,000 at similar lenders, meaning credit unions making between half and twice as many loans.
