Shinhan Bank America, a New York bank that began as Cho Hung Bank of New York, makes large purchase loans, more than half of them in majority-minority neighborhoods.
Purchases made up 85.4% of its 198 loans in 2025. Its typical loan was $485,000, against $175,000 at similar lenders, here state non-member banks making between half and twice as many loans; that was larger than at all but a few of them. Every loan was conventional.
Some 54.0% of its loans went to majority-minority neighborhoods, against 6.6% at the typical peer, among the highest tenth of similar banks. That share has been high for years, at 46.8% in 2020 and 41.1% in 2024.
Only 5.4% of its borrowers had low or moderate incomes (LMI), against 28.0% at the typical peer. Its large loans, most of them for home purchases, may explain much of the gap. Its share of loans in LMI neighborhoods, 18.7%, was close to the peer figure of 17.3%.
Its loans rose 21%, faster than about seven in ten similar banks, which grew 10%, as did the whole market. It has more than doubled from 91 loans in 2023, though it remains a small lender in a big market: it ranked 212 of 802 in New York-Newark-Jersey City, where JPMorgan Chase Bank leads.
