Obsidian Financial Services filed its first report in 2025, as a home-purchase lender that leans heavily on loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).
It made 654 loans in its first reported year, close to the 705 of the typical similar lender (non-bank lenders making between half and twice as many loans). They were spread across 24 states and 96 metros, with Texas its biggest state. In Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands it took 0.1% of a $43.85B market, where United Wholesale Mortgage ranks first.
FHA loans make up 60.1% of its lending, against 18.6% at similar lenders, more than at nearly all of them. Only 34.9% of its loans are conventional. Home purchases account for 87.5% of its loans and refinances the rest. Its typical loan, $325,000, sits near the middle of its peers.
It makes 29.4% of its loans in low- and moderate-income (LMI) tracts, against 20.0% at similar lenders. In majority-minority tracts the share is 60.9%, against 42.8%. Both are higher than at about four in five of its peers. Its heavy FHA lending may help explain the pattern.
