A long contraction
Its count fell from 219 in 2020 to 70 in 2022, 30 in 2023, 27 in 2024 and 21 in 2025. The 22% drop last year was steeper than at about seven in ten similar lenders, meaning credit unions making between half and twice as many loans. The typical one made 5% fewer loans, while the whole market grew 10%. Higher rates may explain part of it: its typical rate was 3.25% in 2020 and 6.88% in 2025, and two-thirds of its loans are refinances.
