First Basin Credit Union, a $350 million credit union in Odessa, Texas, has all but stopped making mortgages: it reported one loan in 2025.
The credit union first reported its mortgage lending in 1994. It made 34 loans in 2018, 33 in 2020 and 19 in 2022. Since then the count has dropped to two in 2023, none in 2024 and one in 2025. It recorded no loans in 2021 either.
Its single loan in 2025 was a $215,000 refinance in the Midland metro area, where it ranked 267 of 294 lenders. Similar lenders, here credit unions making between a quarter and four times as many loans, typically made three. A single loan says nothing about whom the credit union lends to or at what price, so its shares and rate are not worth comparing.
Five years earlier it made 33 loans worth $5.2 million, all conventional. Its record shows a lender that made a few dozen mortgages in a good year and has since made almost none. Even then its lending was uneven: in 2019 it made only seven loans.
