Department of Commerce Federal Credit Union, once a lender of several hundred home loans a year, reported just 3 in 2025.
The credit union made 681 home loans in 2021 and 485 the year before. Then the count fell to 185 in 2022 and 9 in 2023. It made 25 in 2024 and 3 in 2025. The figures do not show why the business shrank so far, so fast; whether it stopped making home loans itself is an open question.
Three loans, all home purchases and all conventional, are far too few to say anything about its borrowers, prices or neighborhoods. Its peer group, credit unions making between half and twice as many loans, numbers only 16, which is also too small to read much into.
It has reported home lending since 1990, the year the public data begin, and has lent in the Washington market since then. In 2016 it merged with The White House Federal Credit Union, whose filings count as its own in the competition figures. Its main state in 2025 was Illinois; it first appeared in the Chicago market in 2023.
